EVERYBODY is "Going Natural" Does it Bother you...?

Is it just me or does it seem like everybody is "going natural"? Just within the past seven days two women have approached me about natural hair, and they said in their comments (as a part of the reason they were doing it too) that it seems like everyone is going natural, or as one sister put it, "doing the natural thing".

Incident One:

Nurse Treating My Son: "Are you going natural?"

Sunshine: With a small grin on my face, "I've been natural three years. Are you natural?"(She was wearing a wig)

Nurse: With a puzzled look on her face, (in reference to my length maybe?) "Yeah, I'm transitioning to natural. It's like the thing to do. You can do a lot of styles obviously, and everybody is going natural. There are a lot of YouTube videos about it and everything"

Incident Two:

Freshly Big Chopped: "I was hoping I would run into you! I told you I was gonna cut it all off!"

Sunshine: " Yes you did! And it looks good."

Freshly Big Chopped: "Are you going natural?"

Sunshine: "Um...What do you mean?"

Freshly Big Chopped: " It's longer than before, so you're gonna grow it out natural?"

Sunshine: "Maybe! I don't know. But I've been natural three years."

Freshly Big Chopped: "Yeah, it seems like everybody doing the natural thing, so I just figured why not!"

Does it bother me? Not at all. If going natural is trendy, then I'm glad! The more women who go natural, the more likely we are to break the cycle of passing down hair hatred to future generations. The trendier it becomes the easier the journey becomes for new naturals. The more people do it, the less abnormal it'll be ‘til finally it can just be hair.

There have been at least two women who have big chopped after seeing my hair. They lived near me  making me no longer the only woman in town rocking the fade. For a second there, I was like "Dang!, Now I don't stand out anymore :-(" But once I got over myself, I saw how their chops were actually reasons to celebrate! I am so thankful I could have inspired them.

So what about you NatSun? Honestly, does it bother you that every body is going natural and it’s becoming trendier?  Do you enjoy being the unique natural in the group or do you see the increase in naturals as a cause for celebration?

For all the reasons you stated, I think the more people who go natural the better. But I also think that it's more likely than not that going natural is a trend, as opposed to a permanent change in our culture. I say this because of the continued and growing proliferation of weaves/wigs. I guess time will tell...

I love seeing other naturals. I always feel like there is a connection when I see other naturals like a family member& Glad to see them. That I'm not alone on this journey into my natural look. I don't think I like the reason that because others are going natural just to jump on the bandwagon. I think I feel that way because I have made up my mind not to give up and that if I can be displined in doing my own hair I can be discplined in other area. That I don't care of anybody has a problem with it I am going to do this. So for me it's a Independent Embracing myself choice  and also this choice for me is a stance or a stepping stone into confindence that was not there as much before.  But I certainly wish them well with them embracing the full package of themselves. Confidence to stand not follow the crowd because the crowd is following is something that will have to be work out in time.

For me going natrual has been a spiritual Journey, as I stated in my profile. I've been natrual many times in my life and alway's knew that oneday I would commit to it! Sounds silly in a way why should wearing my hair in it's normal state have to be a spiritual thing? Because most of us were brought believing  that there was something wrong with "OUR HAIR" we got relaxers or even the Jerry Curl. There for I had to leran to love me and that included my hair<3.

The more Natruals definitely! In my eyes it would represent great Self-esteem as women and a a race of women..... March On Natruals*~<3~* MUAH!

no, it doesn't bother me.  when i see other naturals they ask me about my hair and what i use and i give them pointers and refer them to Whitney AKA Naptural85 on youtube.  what bothers me is people who make comments like, "why you wanna wear yo hair like that?" and other comments. to those people i ignore.

No, it doesn't bother me. I actually try to talk people into going natural. Even though, I am still trying to fully embrace it myself (still after 4 years). This is hard, but I am very grateful for all of the natural hair communities where I can go to get rejuvenated!!!

I dont mind people going natural because as we all know it is a beautiful thing but I just want people to do it for the right reasons. Like you said in one of your videos, those people who are just doing it because it is in like last seasons jackets then those are the people more likely to go back to perming their hair. I was with my boyfriend today and he loved my hair when it was long and when  I had the perm,  and he says,"Baby, I love your hair now because it brings out your pretty face!". I almost cried. So ladies, do it for you, not because it is whats in.

Here in Los Angeles natural hair is not as prevalent but I am seeing more and more women wearing their natural hair. As another Los Angeleno said it's mostly at Whole Foods, farmer's markets or Leimert Park, but I am seeing more naturals around the Hollywood and miracle mile area. As an actor though when I go out on auditions nine times out of ten I am the only woman with natural hair, most of the other actresses wear weaves or press their hair and inevitably one will ask if I find I get less auditions because I'm natural.

I love the fact that so many women are going natural now. I have to admit, when I first went natural I did not know anyone eles who was natural. Now, I know SEVERAL people who are natural. Its the most beautiful thing ever!!!!!!!

I love that others are going natural.  I live in Los Angeles where it is rare that I run into "naturals" unless I am in a store like Whole Foods or Sprouts (natural, organic food stores) or am in Leimert Park (the only community in Los Angeles devoted entirely to the preservation and cultivation of Black culture).  My experience in this city, is when I see another "natural" we take notice of each other and have a sense of pride.

Honestly it doesnt bother me because black women in the future will feel more comfortable and free with natural hair since everyone is accepting it now. I see it as a celebration because women of color is starting to realize that they dont need the creamy crack!

well it doesn't bother me at all. in fact, i'm glad black women are going natural.

well, where I'm from it's a fifty-fifty between the naturals and the non-naturals. it's a good thing for females to want to free themselves of the "bondage" of non-natural hair but if they are doing it because everybody is doing it, then chances are they will revert to non-natural hair.

EVERY ONE ant my job and i mean EVERYONE is natural now (emphasis on the now). when i first tarted working there, i was already transitioning. i didnt really tell many girls about it because i still wasnt exactly sure what i was doing. then when i big chopped, everyone loved it and had lots of questions. it turns out that one of my co workers had been transitioning too but wore wigs. me and her big chopped on the same day but she wore a wig to work. after she aw my hair, she got the courage to wear hers (after two years of wigs). then two other girls started transitioning. i had been talking to one of my close friends about how she should go natural because she has such an unusual texture (kinky but loose..weird). she was like "tabi stop trying to convince me. i love my relaxed hair. i will never cut it" i was like ok and didnt bring it up anymore. a week later, she sent me a pic of her in the process of big chopping......(she got the side eye from me. lol.) but it was crazy and i am so happy to have influenced so many people.
